Built in the 19th century, the house was bought as a hunting lodge in 1888 by Lord Lonsdale, then one of the richest men in the country. Known as the Yellow Earl, he ensured that his name went down in history by bequeathing the famous Lonsdale Belt to boxing. Just past the Langdale Chase Hotel, turn right into Holbeck Lane (signed Troutbeck and Townend). The hotel drive is half a mile up the lane, on the left hand side.FROM THE NORTHFollow M6 (South) to junction 40, Penrith. Take the A66 to Keswick, join the A591 passing Grasmere and Ambleside. Approximately 1 mile south of Ambleside, just after the Low Wood Hotel, turn left into Holbeck Lane. The Hotel drive is half a mile up the lane on the left hand side.
