General Description: Situated on Broadway in Shifnal, Shropshire, The Wheatsheaf Inn (also known as The Tap House) is of historical and architectural interest and is Grade 2 listed. Its position along the north south axis of the town (which, according to local council records (2000) is probably an ancient route from mediaeval times) contributes to the eclectic historical aesthetics of the Broadway Conservation Area. The Wheatsheaf has always been a traditional pub, and it is our intention to maintain that as much as possible. The interior of the building is 17th century, with huge beams, low ceilings, open inglenook fires and traditional furniture. When you walk into the pub it is like stepping back in time whilst at the same time being enveloped into a warm, cosy and welcoming atmosphere that the pub oozes. However, in the current economical climate many pubs are suffering and closing. Therefore we realised that in order for the pub to thrive and succeed in a changing world we needed to juxtapose the old with the new in some ways, whilst at the same time embracing the real ale culture and providing customers with high quality cask ales. Buildings such as The Wheatsheaf seem to have a timeless affinity with change and the environment and atmosphere is ideal to offer a continental experience with an array of ales and lagers as well as speciality coffees, teas and alfresco dining in the warmer months. Hence, ArtyBars was born out of a combination to provide a continental experience for the community and tourists and also from a long ambition to be able to exhibit and sell art for local and visiting artists in a relaxing, informal environment. Art exhibitions also take place in the pub. The outside area at the rear of The Wheatsheaf is private, heated and protected from the wind. At the same time the addition of murals to the walls give an impression of being surrounded by rolling Shropshire hills and also an inside view of the Inns bar during the 17th century. This is a great talking point as many of the locals have been immortalised onto the murals. The guest accomodation has recently been developed and the bedrooms have been completely refurbished in a traditional style. During the refurbishment 17th century oak floors were revealed and restored in some parts of the accomodation. The original timbers and beams are still insitu and remain a traditional feature of the Inn.
